################################################################################### This Readme file contains a description of the active region (single-pointing) Band3 Solar Science Verification data and data products. Additional information can be found at: http://almascience.org/alma-data/science-verification The calibration and imaging procedure are described below. A tutorial on reducing solar data can be found in a CASA guide at: https://casaguides.nrao.edu/ The Calibrated Data and Reference Images provided here were produced using CASA version 4.7.0. ################################################################################### These SV observations have been taken with the aim of testing ALMA solar capability at Band3 (100 GHz, 3.00mm). The observations were obtained between 17:21:26 - 17:57:02 UT on 16 December 2015 in the 6th solar commissioning campaign. The target of the observations is the west side of the preceding sunspot of the active region 'AR12470'. The preceding sunspot of AR12470 is the biggest sunspot in the solar disk on the observing day, and its magnetic polarity is negative. The observation is carried out with the single-pointing, but the pointing tracked the observed area in consideration of the differential rotation. The LO1 frequency is set to 100 GHz, and the correlator mode set to Time Domain Mode (TDM). The spectral windows for solar observations differ significantly from non-solar observation in that scientific data are contained in spectral window ID numbers 5,7,9, and 11. The calibrated data contained in AR_Band3_SP_CalibratedData.tgz includes only the data for these spectral windows. WVR calibration must not be applied for this dataset because the radiometers saturate when the ALMA antennas point toward the Sun. During the observations, the atmospheric calibrations for the phase calibrator were not obtained to reduce the time gap between the scientific scans. The atmospheric calibrations for the Sun were obtained in order to calculate the system equivalent flux density. Therefore, the calibration table created from the atmospheric calibrations for the Sun were applied to the phase calibrator in the reduction script. Since single-dish observation was not obtained with the interferometric observation simultaneously, we cannot estimate the actual brightness temperature in the images. The imaging script for creating 2-sec cadence movie is included in the package. --------------------------------------------------------------- AR_Band3_SP_UncalibratedData.tgz contains the raw data and the complete set of scripts to calibrate the data and produce images. The tar file contains: 1 asdm datasets: * uid___A002_Xade68e_X3c % No data were obtained with the TP-array. 5 python scripts: * SunRedUtil.py * ARBand3SPCal.py * ARBand3SPImg.py * ARBand3SPImg_mov.py * auto.py [Instructions to run the calibration and imaging scripts] Before running the python scripts, the following software must be installed: - CASA https://casa.nrao.edu/ - Analysis Utilities https://casaguides.nrao.edu/index.php/Analysis_Utilities Instructions to install these packages can be found at the above websites. After unzip+tar, move the working directory to AR_Band3_SP_UncalibratedData. Then, start CASA and execute the following command: execfile('auto.py') auto.py will calibrate the interferometry data, create the interferometry image, and create a 2-sec cadence movie. It may take up to 2 days to finish the data processing depending on the computing environment. When the data processing completes successfully, three FITS files will have been created in the working directory. The FITS files are also included in the download package in the tar file AR_Band3_SP_Referenceimages.tgz. ------------------------------------- AR_Band3_SP_CalibratedData.tgz contains the calibrated uv-data and scripts that can be used to create the 2-sec cadence image. The tar file contains: * uid___A002_Xade68e_X3c_split.ms.cal * uid___A002_Xade68e_X3c_split.ms.cal.flagversions * ARBand3SPImg.py * ARBand3SPImg_mov.py [Instructions to run the imaging scripts] Before starting the reduction and imaging processes, you must install the following software. - CASA https://casa.nrao.edu/ After unzip+tar, move the working directory to AR_Band3_SP_CalibratedData. Then, start CASA and execute the following commands: execfile('AR_Band3_SPImg.py') execfile('AR_BAnd3_SPImg_mov.py') When the imaging scripts complete successfully, three FITS files will be present in the working directory.
