Science Verification: Lambda Orionis


Lambda Orionis is a star forming region at a distance of about 360 pc, and is also known as the "Head of Orion". The region to be mapped is part of the Barnard 30 dark cloud. The area to be covered is ~8 x 4 arc minutes centered on RA 05:31:22 dec +12:05:00. This region has complex extended structure and contains numerous low-mass proto-stars and clumps that are thought to be in a pre-proto-stellar state. The mosaic is quite large so short inter-subscan times are required.

Capabilities to be verified

With this target we will demonstrate the Cycle 1 imaging extended structure capabilities. The observations will be a large mosaic using the 12-m array, 7-m array (ACA) and single-dish, in band 3 continuum. The correlator mode will be: low spectral resolution.

Other functionalities that this target will be used to demonstrate are: large mosaic, continuum single dish.


This is an example of a galactic region that has complex extended structure but is well off the galactic plane so that there is not too much problem with finding "off" positions.
